Dvds Karon

sorry guys but if you could reply asap if anyone knows that would be great!

Dvds Karon

Hi Caity, We buy our DVDs every year from Tommy. He has a stall next to the Oyster bar across the road from the Kata beach resort. We had a list which we left with him 2 days later we went back %26amp; 150 DVDs where ready for us. If you do use him tell him he was recommended by ';meet the fockers'; from Australia.. His wife also has a shop opposite the bank at Kata behind the lady selling the thai silk cushion covers, she sells clothes %26amp; shoes %26amp; can also help you out with the DVDs. Have a great time in Phuket . CJ

thanks for the chuckyjellie! Can i ask how much you payed for the dvds each, do u get a special rate when you buy that many?

Ta:)

Hi Caity, We paid 70baht a copy %26amp; there were extras thrown in because we bought so many. We know that we can get them for 60 baht if we wanted but in the 4 years we have been dealing with Tommy %26amp; his beautiful wife we have never had a dud. CJ

thanks cj only 2 sleeps now!

Hi Caity, You must be getting very excited by now. Have a great time in Thailand. CJ

    hi

can anyone recommend a cheap, clean hotel in phuket with a decent pool and not too far out

    dave

    hotel

Pikey, where in Phuket do you want to stay? Do you want to be near the beach, night life etc, if you narrow down your question to what you want, what you mean by cheap, ages of people staying and where you want to stay it will be easier for people to recommend somewhere as there are hundreds of hotels to choose from. Also when are you planning on going as this makes a difference to prices too.

    Bangkok... 26 Oct - 30 Oct

Hi everyone, I am making my second trip to BKK in 2 years and will be staying at the Diamond City Hotel.

Purchased the tickets and hotel at the Natas Fair... the agent was telling me that this is a relatively new hotel just behinf Asia Hotel.. so i guess the location must be pretty good

Has anyone stayed there before???... Would appreciate some comments if any.

I will be ariving only at 9 pm (BKK time) on 26 Oct so i guess i may most prob just hit the night mkts (PatPong etc)... Any suggestions for the other days. I will of course shop at the famous MBK, Siam Ctr, WTC and also CTC mkt on either Sat/Sun.

My BF is going along and he is not really a shopping guy... any ideas what we can do??

    Thanks in advance!

    Bangkok... 26 Oct - 30 Oct

I don%26#39;t know that particular hotel but I have stayed at the Asia in the past and it is quite a good location. There is a skytrain stop right at the Asia so that will quickly get you around. If you do nothing else besides your shopping, you must go to Wat Pra Keow / Grand Palace and spend some time on the river. Have fun!

    Bangkok... 26 Oct - 30 Oct

Never heard of this hotel before.

You are quite a way from Patpong etc.

Why not check out the hotel website. This should tell you if it is a dump or not and hopefully it will have a location map.

';behind Asia Hotel'; is a wide description. There is a large area behind the Asia hotel.

    Hi InitialAT,

My travel agent also recommended me Diamond City Hotel, is this hotel good? Is the BTS station very far from the hotel? Will the taxi driver know where is the hotel? What about the room condition?

Hope to hear from you real soon.

    Thanks

This is the map that I found on the asiatravel web site.

Yes, it is at the back of Asia hotel.

my advice - Do not take the bf shopping with you- because you are mentioning some very serious shopping places and you need hours and hours to see everything and there is nothing worse than a nagging bf (unless it%26#39;s a nagging husband hahaha)

seriously though, he will see stuff he wants for himself- it would be impossible to go to MBK for example, and not be caught up in the excitement. too much fun!!! :-))

    Phuket - Hilton Hotel

Hi ! Read heaps of positive review about this hotel....would appreciate if anyone can share :

    a) Is public transport readily available at its front lobby, eg tuk-tuk?

    b) Is it a beach front resort? We%26#39;ll be travelling with young kids...hope to have minimal travelling time %26amp; effort

    c) Any difference in the various wings....which of it has been renovated most recently?

    Cheers !!

    Phuket - Hilton Hotel

Hi we stayed in the Hilton a few weeks ago. It is a great hotel. It is across the road from the beach, as the Hilton is so big it is a quite a walk.We stayed in the Lotus wing, The rooms are very big in this wing our daughter husband and 2 children all managed with room to spare. The tuk tuks are right outside the resort, they are a very cheap and a fun way to get around. The Hilton is a big resort with lots of pools and a good Kids club. The gym there is very good. The even have a cinema for wet days, The staff are fantastic. We can all recomend it.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Normnal ! Am glad to hear from someone who have stayed there before...and it sure help in our hotel selection.

are the meals expensive in this hotel?

Meals are expensive at any hotel. We only had one meal at the hotel in the Thai Thai, and yes it was quite expensive compared to outside. We used to have lunch next to the pool from the cafe cino and that was very well priced and the girls there are so nice. Lovely baguets and coffee, it was impossible to change anything though as you thought they understood you, but you never quite got what you wanted, but we didn%26#39;t bother, we saw the funny side.

    hi

just returned from phuket this week. we stayed at the hilton. You will have a great time.

we booked in early october and we ended up staying our last two nights on phi phi as we couldn%26#39;t get all the nights easily where we wanted on phuket, so it could be at least partially true, our agent could still find some places, just mighten be your first choice

we holidayed in phuket last october and decided to chance getting a room on phi phi ... our friends had already booked months ago. we were shocked to find the place booked out and luckily shred with our friends. the moral ... always book ... its a small island

Hi, we are looking to travel to Thailand/Phuket in March 2007. What should we be budgetting in so far as airfares from Brisbane and nightly accomodations in a mid/upper range hotel?

Just a price guide in AUD is all I%26#39;m after. Thanks Heaps.

    Advice Pleeze!!! : )

Singapore airlines have got some good fares available directly on their website for travel between 16/1/2007 %26amp; 31/3/2007 (as long as you depart before 31/3 you can take advantage of these fares). They have to be booked quickly but are $924 return including taxes, they are a great airline.

    singaporeair.com/saa/鈥?/a>

    Advice Pleeze!!! : )

Return flights @ AUD1,000 to 1,200 per adult...

Nice 4* or 5* hotel room with breakfast from AUD 100 to 200 per day. Phuket has better discount of mid and low season than Samui... as Samui is seen as having more sunshine that time of year.

Meals (other than breakfast) AUD20 to 30 per person per day.....

transport, tours and drinks.... well.. depends a lot on you. Average tour is 1,200 Baht to 1,800 Bahts.... Drinks.... 100 to 200 Baht..... A car for a day... from 1,000 Baht.... plus petrol.... Short taxi trip.. 40 to 60 Baht... About 300 or 500 Baht gets you from airport to hotel..

Yes, the Singapore airlies flight is great value.. I managed to get 2 tickets on March 31... lucky as it%26#39;s the beginning of the School holiday in Qld.. I actually already posted this.. the very day I found the special....

Thanks ever so much for your help guys!

Mosegrison, what is Thailand like in April? Is there any particular reason you are travelling at that time or is it simply a convenient time for you?

    Hi firebucket

We thought of going in March 2007, but most of the hotels are still at the high rate/night. We arrive the 31st March and are paying almost twice as much for a superior room at the Amari for that night than we would from the 16th April. If you are thinking of going in March, pick up some current travel brochures from travel agents as they have the prices till March 31st, then compare them with prices you can book yourself on line. Some of the more popular rooms like Holiday Inn Pool access rooms in the Busakorn wing may already be booked out, we couldn%26#39;t get one for April. Some web sites do a deposit rather than paying total cost.

Try these sawadee, res24, precisionreservation, hoteltravel, bestthaihotel, asiarooms, asiatravel, bangkokian, circleofasia, morethailand, Worldres, holidays2thailand, planetholiday, asiabesthotel asiareservations.net, thailandhotels.net, asiahotels.net,

    Lee

Sunsets4us... I too like the Busakorn wing at the Holiday inn... spent a few days there a couple of years ago and noticed that it had a very good offer.. like pay 4 stay 7 or something like that last July.... but not likely to be cheap till after Easter... But do check again after Christmas.. sometimes good specials appear all of a sudden... and not all hotels/resorts use the same dates for low season...

firebucket ... late March and April is, I guess, the hottest time of year in Thailand with the build up to the Monsoon.... however on the coast it%26#39;s usually quite nice... I guess the best time is around Christmas, January and February.. For me it has to do with vacation time... so (for me)... anytime is a good time... Just have to choose where you go... and hope for the best.... Around October/November you are more likely to get some rainy days....

    Hi Mosegrisen

We were looking at staying in the pool access rooms from 16th -22nd April, they were still over $200 night but we tried 5 different booking sites and they all said they were double booked already. We had the choice of the villa rooms or the studio rooms, but we managed to get pool access at the Merlin Beach, so we are quite happy with that. the hardest thing I found was trying to decide where to stay.

    Lee

Thanks for all the info guys!!

I am looking at a return fare for $966 return in early March 2007 which seems to be quite good??

    I can%26#39;t decide on accomodation!!

Just a quick question though, is it worth doing a stop-over in SIngapore for a couple of days on the way to Phuket or should I just head straight there?

It just seems like an opportune time to quickly experience another country, rather than just the airport? What do you all think?

If you havent been to Singapore before then I would definetly do a stop over, it doesnt have the atmosphere of Thailand but is certainly worth a visit. You can visit the Zoo, Sentosa Island, sip a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar or High Tea at Raffles (beautiful hotel!), wander around little India %26amp; China Town, visit the restaurants %26amp; bars at Clark Quay , enjoy a cruise on the river, shop on Orchard Road etc etc. I%26#39;m sure you would enjoy it.

forgot to add, if you are booking with Singapore airlines they often have a little booklet that you can pick up at their counter at Singapore airport which offers lots of coupons (2 for 1 to the zoo, sentosa etc).

  • These 2 girls need help!!!!!!!!!!

Me and my friend are flying in to Bangkok from different cities (She from Singapore, me from Shanghai). We arrive about an hour apart from each other(she 12.15AM, me 01.20AM). This means she would probably clear customs and wait for me outside at the main arrival terminal. Problem is, we haven%26#39;t been to the new bangkok airport(Savarnbhumi), so where shall we meet?? Is there like a Starbucks that%26#39;s open 24hours or Burger King? Somebody please help us 2 girls in distress. Thanks a million!!!

    These 2 girls need help!!!!!!!!!!

I have not been to the new Suvarnabhumi either. But I have this suggestion:

Since one of you will be arriving first and it%26#39;s only an hour apart, then arrange to meet outside the departure gates of the later flight. When you exit the gates first, check the arrival screen for the later flight arrival gate number. Then just go and wait for her at the relevant gate.

Don%26#39;t worry, other than the size of the airport, it is relatively safe and well-signposted.

    These 2 girls need help!!!!!!!!!!

    Can anyone else offer advice...please?

I was at the airport last week. There would be no problems with your friend collecting her luggage and waiting there for your flight to arrive. She can check what gate you will be arriving and where your bags will come off. Then the two of you can go through customs (the declaring bit) and then out to get your transport.

Or as the previous poster said she can check your gate and wait for you there.

There is a Burger King but that is on the departures floor.

There is a Starbucks on level 3

Indeed there is a Starbuck on level 3 (just 1 level up from arrival)

Waiting at arrivals floor is possible and you can overlook it well.

The new airport is really nice and impresive. Good information panels.

    Do this..

Upon your arrival, go to departure hall. Right at the end of the departure hall on the RIGHT, there is a FAMILY MART (like 7-11) and seats there.

Buy a hot coffee while waiting.. its gonna be cold since airport is quite empty by then.

Have u heard of the ...ghost story? LOL just kiddin..

    Anyway, enjoy yourself.

Need any bkk help, give me a buzz or email me offline.

    Cheers/Cud.

Oh, forgot to ask - is the Family Mart or Starbucks open 24 hours at the airport? Is the Starbucks at level 3 INSIDE the passengers only area or out at the public access area?

Can a kind soul please help?

Hi, I%26#39;m a travel agent and am heading to Thailand on the weekend. We are spending 5 nights at the Racha during our stay- if you are not travelling within the next two weeks im happy to give you a report as soon as I return.

I do know that the deluxe room looks alot nicer than the superior- havent really heard much about the food yet. If you search the Racha in these posts there are a few outdated ones with a little info.

    Ill definitely let you know...

    The RACHA Resort...Anyone has been?

The hotel is totally stunning. All rooms are great but try and get one with a sea view.

Make sure you go to Raya Family and Raya beach restaurants.

I think Racha is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

You will have a great time

    Cheer AussieGal and AussieAnge!

We will be goin on the 10th Nov. so i cant wait for your latest report on the hotel. Hope that the weather will be kind to you during your stay and that the sea will be nice and calm for your ride there.

    AussieAnge:

will definitely check out the Raya family and Raya beach restaurants. a gr8 pity that the deluxe rooms with pool are all fully booked. were you satisfied with the room you stayed in? one thing i would like to know more though is - how much privacy does the deluxe rooms offer?

The pool villa right by the beach looks so good...but its far too pricey....would love to stay in one soon though :p

    Cheer AussieGal and AussieAnge!

Sorry I have been disconnected for a couple of weeks, you have probably sorted your room by now.

We had a Pool Villa - just stunning. They only have about 3 deluxe with pools so I am sure they are always booked well in advance.

Some rooms have more privacy than others. Try to get one about half way up the hill - better than right on the beach for privacy.

    Have a great time

    Thanks AussieAnge....

I will try to get a room thats up the hill, not sure if it works if i write in personally to Racha. I initally booked for the Deluxe with pool but its fully booked unfortunately... very disappointed but anyhow, will be flying in this friday and cant wait... hopefully the weather will hold up for us :p

Would you by any chance know the room numbers for the deluxe villas that offers more privacy....cheers for all the help!!

    Hi,

Nearly missed your date, im hoping you havent departed yet!!

Racha was the most amazing resort ive stayed at. I went there not knowing what to expect so maybe try that too because it made it all the more beautiful. The rooms are amazing, we only stayed in a superior room (the diff between this and deluxe is that a superior room is a little smaller and has another villa side by side) and it was great, so the deluxe will be beautiful.

They just had great touches- When you arrive they play beautiful music and let you pick your shampoo scent and just lovely touches like that- and they turn down your bed every night and leave nice notes.

Theres not alot on the island to do but relax which was awesome! the main pool area overlooks the most beautiful bay and its nice and quiet.

The restaurants at the racha resort are nice but more expensive than the other resorts (there are a few smaller resorts on the island on the other side and next to the racha). We mostly ate at the Earth Cafe (i think thats what it was called it was downstairs on the right side of the main building where you have breakfast) because it was a little cheaper and nicer. The sunset restaurant is lovely and has nice views- you have to reserve tables in the day in order to get the best views so make sure you do this. I had heard bad reviews about the food but i didnt mind it (the seafood at the seafood bbq was dissapointing but other than this great)

The staff are friendly and we only had a few hiccups with service (sometimes at the restaurants one person takes your order and someone else brings it so there can be a little bit of a breakdown in communication at times but this only happened once to us) Most of the staff have no previous hospitality experience but i found them great!!

We did a snorkel tour which was great- they also offer day trips out to Phi Phi Island.

Overall, amazing. A very very beautiful quiet, romantic picturesque resort.

    Enjoy your trip :)

Sorry can%26#39;r give ou the numbers of he more private villas - but you will love it anyway

CHeers Gals....you both have been very helpful...

AussieGal3, glad you really enjoyed it and that the weather has been good to you....I will be flying there on friday 10th nov in the morning!! Cant wait and looking forward to how the boat ride there would be....Give you guys my update after my trip....(Please dont rain....) Ciaos

Hey hey...Racha was great! Weather was fine wtih clear blue sky. boat ride there, was smooth and the floating platform was pretty stable due to the fine weather.

Love the ATV around the island and the little restaurant on the right side offers cheaper alternatives to the ones offered in the restaurants. It really fits into what we wanted rfriom this holiday... somewhere thats far from the crowd and no hassle and bussle of the city life...relaxation was not a a problem at all. a 4/5 days trip is just nice.

out of the 5 days there, it drizzled slightly on just 1 day. service is good and staff are ever friendly.... all in all, i would recommend it anyone :p

    Night markets

    Hi:

Which are the night markets in Bangkok and how late are they open till? Does one get good bargains? Any tips here welcome.

    Thanks

    Sanjay

    Night markets

    Hi%26#39;

I%26#39;m sure there are market stalls set up all over Bangkok by night (and by day) but the 2 that most tourists go to are: Patpong and Suan Lum.

Because these 2 are frequented by tourists you need to bargain very hard to beat the prices you can get at places like MBK and Pratunam by day.As for closing times I think it depends more on individual stall holders than anything else and as long as punters are there they%26#39;ll try to sell.

  • Floating Market and River Kwai in 1 day?

    Hi:

I have been looking at web sites offering tours that cover the Floating market and the River Kwai tour in one day. THey mention that you will not be able to do the Death Railway train ride if you combine these.

I have limited time in bangkok and if these two can be combined without losing the essence of each, I would be happy. Any thoughts? Is The Death Railway train ride unmissable??? Thanks

I might suggest that you take your items to Dr. Sunya of the Tsunami Childrens Foundation. He is a Thai-American working with post traumatic stress disorders in children, adults and families. He%26#39;s been here for nearly two years (came following the tsunami) and can be located via his website at www.tsunamicf.org. His office is located on Bang Niang Beach Road (on the way to Mukdara Resort located just 1.9km north of downtown Khao Lak) and next to the Tsunami Craft Center. Next door you will find Geckos Sports Bar %26amp; Grill where he has become the owner so he can continue his work here.

He works with both the Thais and the Burmese children and can also direct you to ongoing projects should you become interested in getting hands-on.

Thanks for bringing these items for the kids. They will be most gracious.

    John

Oooops. Sorry to mention that this location is in Khao Lak. That will be a drive north of Phuket about 80km. I suggest this area because it is an area that is less frequented by outsiders and the kids here need the donations.

Which Phi Phi island Tour? Express boat or Speed boat?

Hello, could I please get some feedback on which Phi Phi island tour is better, the Express Boat tour or Speed Boat tour? Thanks,

    Melissa.

Which Phi Phi island Tour? Express boat or Speed boat?

Hi Melissa, We have always done Phi Phi day trips by speed boat %26amp; just loved it. CJ

Which Phi Phi island Tour? Express boat or Speed boat?

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated :-)

I agree the speed boats are the way to go

try and get a smaller one maybe 12 to 15 people

just ask when you book tour same price but i like less people

more fun and easer to talk and meet new friends.

    Thank you!

agree speed boat the way to go. but consider a day or two at a resort rather than a rushed day tour. we stayed 4 nights recently and saw the frantic day trippers. book a cheap (but nice) hotel around the tongsai bay restaurant/nightlife area such as phi phi hotel.

Recently witnessed the express boat tour and it was a joke - people packed like sardines.

The speed boat can be a bit full also but at least you tend to get a seat.

Ted , I haven%26#39;t even got to Phuket yet and am already regretting we are not staying longer than the planned five days , i hope to change my flight and stay two days longer, we are booked in to the Cape panwa but am thinking the extra two nights further north , do you know of the Gold Digger resort in Nai yang? dont want to pay the price for the marriott even if it has a good write up , way over my budget !! or any other small places in the area ? many thanks

    help from ted Karma

    Hello Matmat . . .

The Golddigger resort is okay - but it is in kind of a strange location - and a fair walk to the beach. You might find yourself happier at somewhere like the Naithonburi on Naithon Beach. It is not a huge resort - but not small either - but it is right across a quiet street from an excellent and less well-known beach.

Also - take a look at places like Andaman Bang Tao Bay Resort - maybe only 15 bungalows facing right on Bang Tao Beach.

Or . . . if you don%26#39;t mind a short walk to the beach the Tonsai Retreat off Bang Tao Beach is a bit unusual. New brand name I think is - Anchan Resort and Spa. Very small resort.

Or, for something more quite special - and still smallish - the ManaThai in Surin Beach.

Just my bias - I like to be within a minute or two of the beach!

Check those options out and tell me what you think. We can always think up a few more options!

buying a digital camera in bangkok?

hi ive heard mixed reviews about electronic goods in bangkok, id love to buy a fancy sony digital camera so would like to know if anyone else has had experience in this field either good or bad so ill know where to go or where to avoid! thanks in advance

buying a digital camera in bangkok?

With the current exchange rates it is almost as cheap at home these days.

Do your research and check what you want and the prices.

If you buy in Thailand you can get 7% Vat tourist refund as you leave.

Best places Pantip Plaza or MBK just make sure that the place you buy can do the Tourist VAT refund.

    Enjoy your trip

buying a digital camera in bangkok?

I%26#39;ve just bought a fuji 510 in the uk from jessops - my wife was over from bangkok and was of the opinion that generally cameras, if on any sort of offer, were cheaper than they are in pantip plaza. Certainly when i looked in MBK in August there were no real outstanding bargains.

I always do a bit of price comparying for electronics when I%26#39;m in Bangkok and have not found anything cheaper (same quailty - not generic) than I can buy in the US. I%26#39;m not sure about the prices in Ireland though.

Cameras are not cheaper in Bangkok.

After paying the thai VAT ( and not getting a refund because you buy it at a store that does not participate in the VAT scheme, or your total value of purchases does not exceed the VAT for tourist refund target ), you may end up buying a camera that costs much more than in your home country.

I bought a Nikon Digital Camera from IT city at Pantip and am very happy with it

If i am not wrong you can get the 7% VAT refund if youbuy it from IT City

Yeh they sre not cheaper, also bear in mind the warranty incase you have any probs. The airport had a few bargains though

i there i thinking of getting a flight with my boyfriend to ko samui,we were thinking about staying at the central samui beach resort

haw far is it from the airport! and how much are the rooms please help any info would be great

first time going in march 07

It is 15 minutes drive from the airport. Air-conditioned vans are outside the airport and people will come up to you and give a per person rate for a lift to the airport ours was 150bht per person to Chaweng Regent which is close to Central Samui.

I would compare prices between sawadee.com, hotethailand.com, asiarooms.com and morethailand.com some have better deals at different times.

    DMA Pavilion Hotel, BangkoK

    Hi,

We will be visiting Bangkok for the first time next month, with our 3 children; 3-year old twins and a 8-year old girl. We have booked the above hotel. Have anyone stayed there before? We have read some reviews of the hotels, some said good but some gave really bad review.

    DMA Pavilion Hotel, BangkoK

This hotel opened some 10 years ago. My numerous (about 12 stays) with them have always been pleasant. Don%26#39;t expect it to be the Hyatt but is a family oriented, clean and comfortable hotel. Only problem here is - the location is not so good and any travels to places of interest will surely require the services of a taxi. Have a great trip!!

    DMA Pavilion Hotel, BangkoK

hi, i have not stay in DMA before but i have stay beside DMA there is a hotel called Eastin Hotel n i like it there as izzt also quite affordable...... www.farangs.com/eastin-hotel-bangkok.htm hope it could help....

Thanks for the information. The thing is, I only found out that the location is quite far the shopping areas and places of interest. Just wonder if it is easy to get a cab from the hotel?

    Massage

My wife and I are going to Phuket for the first time this winther. I find this the infomations in this forum very useful. So many people rekommend the thai massage. Is it only girls/women who do the massage ?

    Oliver

    Massage

You%26#39;ll find a few LadyBoys doing it too ;-)

    Massage

I must admit - now you mention it - I have never seen a %26#39;proper%26#39; man doing Thai massage.

I note also that you come from Scandinavia, therefore if you are used to the %26#39;Swedish%26#39; style massage then the Thai one will be right up your street.

Expect to pay around 250b for an hour. If you are staying in the south of the island there is a very good place in the Rawai beach area just down from the 7/11 near the entrance to the Evason Resort called %26#39;Jasmine%26#39; which is very professional and is the best one I have found.

    To PhuketRex and SanClemente

Thank you very much for your replies. We look forward to our stay in Phuket, including good thai massage.

    HI

going to bangkok then to koi samui.whats the best currency to take us dollar tbaht or the good old pounnd sterling?

also give me some must see;s and do;s

    money money money

    Hi,

No sense in buying dollars because you%26#39;ll have to pay twice for conversion (拢 to $, then $ to Bht).

Since forex charges in the UK are horrendous would advise to take Sterling (cash or travellers cheques) and change in Thailand.

  • Taylor near Landmark

Forgot to mention if anybody could reccomend a Taylor near tha Landmark hotel.we are only getting 1 1/2 days there and would like to sort a suit out for a weeding, hoping that we could either pick up on our return ,or post it to us. This is our first visit and would be really gratefull for your advise.OR should we leave it till we get to Krabi ,where we will be for 8days, looking at the forums ,seems the best taylors are in Bangkok

    Taylor near Landmark

The best taylors are where you get what you want done to how you wanted it.

If you want a suit I would suggest that 1 1/2 days is not enough and most certainly not have it posted to you or collect it on the last day as you go to the airport. You are leaving yourself open to problems.

Search the forum and you will find horror stories.

Some places offer ';ready in 24 hours'; the quality of most of those places does seem questionable sometimes.

I would suggest you would need 3 - 4 days minimum.

Most taylors do not have their own cutter sweat shop, so it is difficult to have small imperfections corrected..

I found one taylor on my last trip that cut and stitched his own and he made a very good job of my 3 piece suit which I%26#39;m happy with, but the trousers he madefitted and looked good but are not what I wanted, too tight and pockets too small even after I went through everything with him. si I took my suit and left the trousers.

You will get many suggestions and recommendations here but in the end you must make your mind up and take your chances and be very tough with your taylor after all you are paying.

    Good luck.

PS no idea of the quatity or costs but there is a taylor in the basement of the landmark close to the Huntsman. Wherever you use they should be close to your hotel so you do not spend hours travelling to and from them.

    Taylor near Landmark

    I agree with Breconion

If you want a suit in 24 hrs then i am will not be confident of the workmanship

There are a few tailors near Landmark

There is rajawongse and there is Classique

You can go to both of them and see what they have to say

For a proper fit, you will need a few trials so 24hrs isn%26#39;t enough

Maybe you may want to stay a bit more here, get the fitting of the suit done then go to krabi

As for Krabi tailors, well, i don%26#39;t know of any so i am of no help there

If you are desperate for a tailor made suit, then you have one other alternative with the tailors in Bangkok. As much as I second the above 2 recommendation about not getting it done in 24 hours since you dont have enough time for fittings, but there is a way. If you drop into the tailors as soon as you arrive early in the morning, get one fitting done in the evening, and a second early next morning, your suits will be ready in the late afternoon of the day of your second fitting. That%26#39;s just an opinion since I have seen people do that and many have gotten away with it if they went to a recommended tailors. Btw, another good tailor around the Landmark is Crown Tailors in sukhumvit soi 8. They usually dont do 24 hour work either, but if you tell them your situation, they will find a way to get in your fittings, and so will any other recommended shop. Please take this advice - don%26#39;t go into any random shop where they say its ok to get only 1 fitting done or no fitting at all and your suits will turn out alright. That is all a bunch of bull.

Or just contact the tailor before you come and tell them your situation and have them meet you at your hotel and take your measurements and bring sample swatches along so that you can choose your material too

Thanks for advice.Think we had better leave it tillwe get to Krabi ,Just enjoy the sights in Bangkok

  • Going next Tuesday

    Hi Guys,

Am off to Koh Samui next Tuesday (so excited!) Just wondering if anyone is there at the minute what is the weather like? Everything is so unpredicatable at the minute (especially any forecasts on the net!!!!)

    Thanks in advance

    Li

    Going next Tuesday

There is quitea bit of rain around, but that is not unusual. November/early December sees the most precipitation. Hope that does%26#39;nt ';dampen'; your excitement! You may be o.k. -the weather here, as everywhere in the world really, gets more and more unpredictable. I believe the new buzz word is ';Global Dimming';, rather then g,warming.

    All the best!

    Going next Tuesday

Ttravelled back from samui last thursday. This time of year is the monsoon seaqson - its really not as bad as it sounds! We stayed there for 11 nights and it was a mixture of sunshine and showers. There was only one day that the rain lasted all day. The rest of the time there were the occasional showers which lasted for an hour, if that. During our visit we took an island tour via boat and just as we headed out we got caught in a monsoon! Within minutes we were surrounded by clouds, heavy rain and thunder and lightening- i was scared at first but then found it quite exciting!!!! Again, it only lasted for about an hour and as the day progressed the weather just got better and better - i highly recommend doing this day trip - hope you have a great time like we did

Thanks for that - so excited now and i am sure a little rain will not interfere with our holiday - we are staying at the Sala Samui so it will give us an excuse to stay in the hotel for a while if it does rain!

Will post reviews when i get back

    Thanks again

How long will you be at Sala? We will arrive on dec. 4. What kind of room do you have? Have you been to Koh Samui before?

    Hi,

We arrive on the 29th of Dec, staying in a pool villa for 14 nights and have never been to Koh Samui before.

    I am so excited!

Sala Samui or Anantara KOH SAMUI

    Which is better??

Honeymoon for a week coupled with 2 off hong/kong/singapore/bangkok

Been looking at both hotels. Is it worth getting the private poolat Sala Samui?

Are there cheaper places to eat around both hotels??

    Thanks

Sala Samui or Anantara KOH SAMUI

Hi Ross, unfortunatley i cant speak first hand about either - but we are going to the Sala in a weeks time for 10days. This was booked after viewing the excellent reviews on this site and other ';homework';. We have stayed at the Anantara Hua Hin and Chang Rai, both excellent hotels, and from what i have read they both exceed the one in KS.

If you can afford the extra 拢拢 i would say go for the Sala(pool villa if poss, we are in a garden villa, the pool one just exceeds our budget! - but then we%26#39;re not on our honeymoon!) - it is certainly ideally located for restaurants etc and i think after your busy days (and they will be!), in your other destinations you will be glad for your privacy and serenity! Plus if you want to take in the nightlife, its only a 10min taxi ride.

Hope this helps - and enjoy yourselves whever you decide upon!

Sala Samui or Anantara KOH SAMUI

Thanks ferodo..haven%26#39;t priced the other villas as the Garden villa is a t the top of my budget as i%26#39;m including 3daysBangkok and 5 days Hongkong in the trip...around 300more than the balcony at sala, wonder if it%26#39;s worth it if they have nice pools anyway.

Anantara have better balconies i think and a nice infinity pool, around the same price as the balcony at Sala..

only problem is not a lot left at Sala for our requirements so have to make a decision or will miss out.....

    Anyone else got a choice...

How to get to Phi Phi

    Hi

Can anyone recommend how to get to Phi Phi island, preferably by speedboat?

I am booking to stay there for 2 x nights but need to get there first.

    Cheers

    Stuart

How to get to Phi Phi

Depends where you are going to be first ie phuket, krabi etc. Loads of travel agents book speedboats out to Phi Phi so you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem just booking it once you get there.

Have a great time Phi Phi is beautiful.

    Dawn

How to get to Phi Phi

    Hi,

Have recently got back from staying on Phi Phi.

Getting a speedboat out there could be expensive.

RECOMMEND The ferries run twice a day and only take a couple of hours to get there. Our whole family took the ferry and really enjoyed it. had been on a speedboat tour 2 years ago as well (day tour only)

You book an open return ticket and just come back on any day

What do you pay for the ferry trip out there compared to a speed boat ride?

can you tell me the times of the ferries from phuket to phi phi

    Thanks

    Ferrys run twice a day.

Some 8.30 and some 9 then again in the afternoon 1.30 and 2.30pm (sometimes more in high season)

Hiring a private speedboat is VERY expensive, the only other way would be to get on a day trip (about 650 baht) and hop off at Phi Phi.

This link below gives an idea of costs and ferry times, although in our experience last month there was only one boat to choose from and the price was about 1600TB return

Did you ever get your answers about getting to Phi Phi if you can%26#39;t take a ferry? I am trying to go and will miss the last ferry at 2:30 from Phuket and really do not want to stay in Phuket over night for the ferry next morning.

Trying to book Nok Air tickets

Has anyone been successful in booking tickets for this airline and if so, how?

We tried to book Nok Air flights on-line through the airline%26#39;s website, but got a message that they won%26#39;t accept international credit cards. When I phoned the airline I was asked to fax through a copy of my passport and credit card, which I%26#39;m not comfortable doing. We also tried to book the tickets through mpay (as suggested by a post on this site), but can%26#39;t access that method either.

Trying to book Nok Air tickets

Unfortunately if you have an international credit card, you have to follow their procedures, which are archaic to say the least! I want to book with them too but, ike you, I am not comfortable faxing the details requested, then you have to phone up top see if they have been received before you can proceed. Do they want international customers, or what?!?

    Best beach for snorkelling

We are thinking of going to Thailand at the end of 2007 and wanted to know if the snorkelling was any good, and if so what are the best beaches (including beauty, golden sands and not too busy)

    Best beach for snorkelling

Most of us will post from opinion, so watch for PhuketRichard who can give you the facts!

Anyway, MY opinion . . . The rocky areas around the ends of Laem Singh Beach, Kata Beach, and Surin Beach.

    Try http://phuketdelight.com/Phuket_Beaches.htm

Off Phuket - and even better - the rocky areas just off the beaches at Khao Lak Beach and Nang Thong Beach in Khao Lak.

My wife and i returned from Phuket 4 weeks ago this was our second trip but will not be the last,as with most people who visit this most beautiful place it certainly has a long lasting and profound effect .My question is this, ';how can we possibly be expected to adjust to reallity upon our return ?'; Phuket ,unforgettable.

    Hello Paul1968

I have to agree with Andy53 and the best way to recover from your ';Phuket Adventure'; is to start planning the next one.

    Regards From Phuket

    Richard %26amp; Megumi

    Hi Paul,

Been there, done that ;-) ... And Cathy from Adelaide too.

Like what Richard has said, the solution is to start planning for your next trip. Come join us in the 1st week of June! We%26#39;re gonna have lots of fun with Richard. Really looking forward to the pole-climbing ;-p Hahaz!

    Hi

I know just how you feel,we also got back about 4 weeks ago and con not or is dont want to get back into every day life.

I think everybody is right so we have started looking at going back next sep, along way away but its something to look forward to.

Just do it again and have fun.

I 100% agree!!!! There is something about Thailand that once you are home you miss it so much. I am just planning my 3rd trip within the space of 2 years. I have done Samui which I loved, Phuket which was great and am now planning Krabi. Im so excited, I cant wait to stay in Thailand again.

What is it that drags us back? Is it the people, the food, the beaches, the weather, the scenery??? Best holidays ever!

Oh, the post Phuket blues, they can be very depressing. As said concentrate on your next visit, doesent cure but it helps a wee bit.

Also keep looking at all the photo%26#39;s that you have taken, helps with a couple of cold beers, brings the memories back.

    Hang in there mate.........................

It has to be one of the most addictive places on earth. I think it%26#39;s the whole tropical vibe, coupled with the Thais%26#39; laidback attitude and Buddhist philosophy, plus the fact that you just don%26#39;t see people getting stressed out and stroppy like I do in London all the time. They really do need to chill, and Thailand%26#39;s the best place to do this!

just booked ours today, the 6th july. kids are counting the months, and saving there pocket money.they are already talking about were we will go for our fist meal. may be sweets or may be sabai sabai.and those drinks by the pool after a long hard day of shopping.carnt wait. jenny

ya, i have been there 3time this year... will be there again in a month times...... as i just came back from last month...... counting down again.........

I%26#39;m a known ';Thailand addict'; by all my friends. Like Claire and all the rest, I simply just love Thailand to bits! My travel pattern used to be Brisbane, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, Frankfurt etc. But in recent years, with the mushrooming of budget carriers, I%26#39;ve found to my delight that I seem to be doing Phuket, Bangkok, Bangkok, Phuket, Bangkok, Phuket ... at times, with Kuala Lumpur in the midst of the pattern.

I love the Thai people the most - their warmth, their sincerity and those smiles ... Can%26#39;t wait for my next trip to Bangkok!

    Best Western Palm Galleria

I am so pleased to have read some nice reviews of this hotel and also of Khao lak, a bit disappointed that the hotel is 15mins drive away, was really hoping we could just walk into town. Not to worry though. We are flying out on the 17th Jan for 2 weeks, for our belated honeymoon.

How has Khao Lak developed since the Tsunami??? is the damage still very visible.

    Best Western Palm Galleria

The location is beautiful, interesting - though a little bit remote. But, really, the drive into town is short.

There are three Thai restaurants in the immediate area of the BWPG - some info and photos on that at:

    http://khaolaklovers.com/update2.html

More info and photos on Khao Lak itself and the overall recovery at:

    http://khaolaklovers.com/

    and

    http://khaolaklovers.com/update1.html

Links to scans of maps of the area can be found at the home page there - and I am scanning a November 2006 map this weekend - so it may be on line in a few days.

You can certainly still find tsunami damage - the coastal area around Khao Lak was the hardest hit area in Thailand. But, the recovery has been fast and strong. It is hard to believe how much has been done in less than two years.

Personally, on my last visit (last Saturday), I found the place full of optimism and excitement about their first real high season since 2003.

Any Local Tour Operator in Bangkok & Pattaya

Hi! I have free airlines mileage and hotel stay in Bangkok and like to know someone can recommend some good local tour operators or local guide that I can approach to visit Bangkok and Pattaya. I have 5 Days 4 Nights and plan to do 2 days in Bangkok and 2 Days in Pattaya.

Any suggestion %26amp; Thanks in advance for your advice(s)!

Any Local Tour Operator in Bangkok %26amp; Pattaya

There are loads of Travel Agents in Bangkok that have sample menu lists of available tours. Even your hotel may offer tours to some areas. Just walk in the door of the nearest travel agent and choose a tour, they will pick up at your hotel and bring you back. You can check the prices of a couple of agents and choose the price and package that you like.

Sukhumvit Road is one area with many travel agents.

Queen Travel on Sukhumvit Soi 7, in Bangkok, is one of hundreds of agents.

In Pattaya, Malibu Travel is another travel agency you can use.

If you show up in the evening you can sign up for a tour for the following morning. Sometimes you can get an afternoon tour that same morning.

A ';shared van'; will pick you up at your hotel and you either continue on your tour with that van or transfer to a bus and from there to your tour area. Private tours are more expensive.

Getting tours in Bangkok is really pretty simple.

I think we will find some shopping to do. jenny

    Hi Mandurah

we stayed at the Sunset last october and will be going back to stay there again this december (so excited!)

we like the sunset because it is clean, cheap and we like being a little bit away from the craziness of patong. The pool is huge and beautiful and the staff are lovely. It is simple but the beds are huge and the bathrooms are nice with separate bath and shower.

Just depends on what you%26#39;re after i guess - if you like being really close to the action then it%26#39;s probably not the ideal place for you.

at any rate - have a ball!

  • Hotel in BKK with easy airport access? And a pool?

Can you recommend a mid-range (about 3,700baht) hotel on the airport side of town with easy airport access? We%26#39;d definitely prefer one with a pool, if possible.

    Thanks,

    temple

Hotel in BKK with easy airport access? And a pool?

Many hotels have easy access to the airport due to the Bangkok tollways .

Hotels in the Sukhumvit/Siam/Silom areas will meet your requirements.

Many will be within 30-40 minutes of the airport depending on the day of the week and time of day.

If your only requirement is close to the airport, and a pool, try the links on the side here or this link

Most hotels in your price range will have a pool.

    cheap and good seafood

In actual fact, you can go anywhere for good seafood if you%26#39;re thinking about a road side stall. But one good road side stall is Sukhumvit soi 38. They%26#39;re open from 7p.m. till 3 am. They have all kinds of thai food including alot of seafood. Excellent noodles there too. Do give it a try.

    cheap and good seafood

there is some amazing stall food seafood in chinatown if you are up for that type of experience.

For the local hang out for good seafood, it is a stall along Silom street. It is located at the beginning of the road and the same side of Dusit Hotel. I am not sure for the precise location though, sorry

What Kind of Room to Get at Le Meridian?

I%26#39;ve reserved the Junior Suite, but I wanted to know if its worth it to book the deluxe w/ the ocean view (right now the difference is an extra $35 US per night)...

    It%26#39;ll be a honeymoon vacation from Dec 19 - Dec 26..

What Kind of Room to Get at Le Meridian?

Hi Ankoor - We have just returned from a week @ Le Meridien and absolutely loved the hotel! We stayed in an ocean view deluxe and it was great; nice balcony facing the sunset, open bathroom, and a sizeable room. I%26#39;m not sure how much more space you have in a junior suite, but ours was perfect for the 2 of us. Also, there%26#39;s a large fitness center with helpful staff and a great happy hour every night at the beach bar from 5:30 to 7:30! Let me know if you have any other questions!

What Kind of Room to Get at Le Meridian?

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for your note. I just realized that there%26#39;s 2 Le Meridians. Which one did you stay at? The yatch club or the Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort? My reservations are for the Le Meridien..

HI Ankoor..Stayed at both the d/luxe seaview and the Junior Suite in May this year. The junior Suite was a lot larger with polished floor boards and DVD player.Being your honeymoon without a doubt upgrade. We had some serious condensation problems with a deluxe/ocean view and had to be upgraded after a room resembled a wet sauna.Terrible.I have also stayed at the Yatch Club address and these rooms were fantastic.Le meredian Patong is a great resort but preffered the yatch club as It felt more intimate although many would disagree. My wife who works in the travel industry said she would not recommend the Patong resort based on our experiences with the room as her clients would demand a upgrade. But besides the room it was a great hotel.

I didn%26#39;t see a Le Meridien at Patong beach, but the one we%26#39;ve reserved the Junior Suite is the Le M茅ridien Phuket Beach Resort (address is 29 Soi Karon Nui, Tambon Karon 路 Amphur Muang).

The hotel website says that its 3 miles away from Patong beach, so I%26#39;m assuming that the hotel is not in Patong, but rather in Karon?

From your message, it seems like the Junior suite is definately the way to go instead of the deluxe w/ the ocean view.

Pls let me know if i%26#39;m misunderstanding the hotels.

    Thanks again!! :)

Your Le Meridien is between Karon and Patong on its own beach. Confusingly there%26#39;s another Le Meridien in Khao Lak an hour or so North of Phuket but which is also sometimes misleadingly referred to as Le Meridien Phuket.

Amazinginly, i had no clue about that - thanks a lot for the clarification!!

Any idea which Le Meridien is better? Right now, i%26#39;m at the Le Meridien resort, which i think is in between...?

It%26#39;ll be for a honeymoon, so i%26#39;d prefer it be not too close to Patong beach, but still close enough so we have stuff to do.

    Thanks!!

I think the one you are talking about and which others (before I confused you more!) have referred to is the Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort. It is set on it%26#39;s own with it%26#39;s own beach about 2-3 miles from Patong and 1-2 miles to Karon Beach. So it is near enough to Patong without it being on your doorstep and to Karon Beach, which in my opinion is much nicer. I%26#39;ve only stayed at Le Meridien Khao Lak and envied those staying at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort (because it looked a beautiful hotel) when we stayed on Karon Beach.

What do the TripAdvisor Hotel reviews say between the two on Phuket?

Hi Guys ..I was referring to the Le Meridian patong.Dont get me wrong, this is a lovely hotel with its own private beach and amazing pools.I would strongly suggest the upgrade to Junior suite.Initially we were told you had to leave the airconditioning running 24/7 to help with the humidity in the room.Have stayed at a number of exclusive resorts here in AU and abroad, never had this experience before.Their is also the Le meridian yatch club in Nai harn.A lt smaller but I found more upmarket and personal. The rooms were much bigger with a having massive balconys and DVD and CD player as a standard. But the swimming area is tiny.We had no problem with humidity in the Junior Suite.

Le Meridien Patong IS Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort - as the Thais would say, ';Same, same!'; :))

I have to respond the the condensation problem mentioned by one poster. I have stayed in just about every room type at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort over the past few years and have never had issues with condensation. Part of the issue may be time of year, or leaving balcony door open during high humidity days, of course you will get condensation! Phuket is humid! especially May to October!

In my opinion this resort is the best of both worlds, great property, pools, staff, very secluded beach, many restaurant and activity choices, yet only a 5 minute Tuk-Tuk ride to either Karon or Patong. The LM Yacht Club is smaller possibly more intimate, however only 2 dining choices, very limited choices nearby, and a 30 minute ride to Patong.

kata beach area to ferry pier....how long?

Does anyone know how long it takes to get from Kata Beach area to ferry pier in order to get to Phi Phi? Thanks.

kata beach area to ferry pier....how long?

    hi patlynn

from the kata palm resort to the pier,,to do the phi phi island run .......it was about 20 mins.......we went by a mini bus which was booked in the hotel foyer...1400 baht each for the trip...all gear(mask, snorkle) ,soft drinks and lunch supplied ....our daughter did the same tour last year and got it much cheaper

    hope this helps

    cheers capt pugwash

kata beach area to ferry pier....how long?

The first answer here was not to the ferry pier, but to the marina from where the snorkel trips depart. Count on about 30-45 minutes (depending on the time of day) to the pier for the Phi Phi Ferry.

  • First JetStar Flight

Anyone on the first Jet Star flight out of Sydney on Friday at 15.20?

    First JetStar Flight

No, but we are using them in January so will be following how they go this week. I notice on their website under %26#39;news%26#39; they are now showing what is included in the meal choices etc.

    First JetStar Flight

We are flying 30 April, so will be interested in your thoughts.

    Enjoy your holiday.

My sister and I are flying over for a baby free and husband free shopping trip in mid December- can%26#39;t wait!

I shall report back with how the flight on Jetstar goes. I am not expecting much from the flight to be honest but as we paid such a low fare we can%26#39;t complain too much!

We opted to not get the meal package and will dine before and after our flight and carry onboard some snacks. Ditto for the %26#39;comfort package%26#39;- I am sure we will survive with our own shawl for warmth etc, and our own ipods and books for entertainment.

Will let you know all about it upon our return!

We are on the first flight and it was only $66AUD each way (excluding taxes came to about $450 return). Who cares about not having food for free when its that cheap

We are on the first flight and it was only $66AUD each way (excluding taxes came to about $450 return). Who cares about not having food for free when its that cheap

I%26#39;m going Thursday 30th - booked to fly to BKK before I realised it flew via Melbourne, stuck with it now. Oh well, it was cheap, although I added the meal and etertainment options.

Will be good to see the new BKK airport. I hope they have ironed out some of the initial problems since they first opened it.

    I AM :D

very excited..wonder if they%26#39;ll have anything special for it.

My flights (return from Brisbane to Phuket, that is, including a returning flight to Sydney for the connecting flight), were $477!

Didn%26#39;t realise it was the first flight though.

I%26#39;m annoyed though because all the video console things have been booked already so I%26#39;ll be terribly bored :(

i know I am booked to go on 27.11.06 and rang last week to get a video and they were all sold out. Then today received an email to upgrade to star class (for $200 each) where a video is included.

Im going in Feb and l rang them for a price on an upgrade to starclass and they quoted me $800 per person

    Murf

no doubt they will offer cheaper upgrades nearer the time of departure if they need to fill up seats. Hopefully someone will be able to let us know soon if an upgrade is worth it or not.

Good luck %26amp; happy holidays to all who are travelling on the first flights in the next few days.

    sea canoes question?

    Hi Guys

this may sound like a blond question, but are the sea canoes solid or inflatable?

    ta

    Chelle

    sea canoes question?

Depends on the sea canoes. I%26#39;ve used non-inflatable ones for paddling around open area...they are really nice. To access the hongs, the kayaks are usually inflatable...that way a little air can be let out if the opening is really tight.

    sea canoes question?

really?? mmm not so sure now!! we were going to go on the john grays sea canoes but maybe I am a woose (sic) but I dont like inflatable things! unless it is a floatie ring! lol

all feedback on this matter greatly appreciated!

    ta

    Chelle

If it helps at all, while in the hongs, you can stand up if your canoe does deflate. They dry out to mud flats at low tide.

Also, the inflatable sea canoes were very stable. I wasn%26#39;t particularly apprehensive to start with, but definitely did not have any concerns with stability and floatability. I%26#39;m sure if you wanted, you could also ask to wear a life jacket also. We sat on ours.

I think it would be a shame to miss this outing because of that detail. It really is a special experience.

  • Central Krabi Bay Drop Off

    Hi Guys,

Could anyone please advise that when we leave the CKBR (we are going to Phuket) where will be dropped off at? I need to make arrangements with my driver but don%26#39;t know where to tell him to pick us up from.

I have contacted the hotel 3 times now and no response - not impressed!!

    Central Krabi Bay Drop Off

It will be at Nopparet pier. But they could take you to their ao nang reception place if you ask i expect. Its quite well organised no need to worry.

Cocktails - Is it okay to have ice in Mixed drinks, cocktail

I have heard so much about the water and ice over there, I was just wondering that if I order a margarita or some other cocktail, is it okay to have ice in the drink?

Cocktails - Is it okay to have ice in Mixed drinks, cocktail

well.... a little like the argument about eating fresh salad stuff.

In most of the resorts, ice is made with bottled water... so it%26#39;s ok....

Personally I prefer not to take ice cubes in my drinks, ever... and I only drink bottled water.... and always check if the bottles that I buy are sealed.... I never eat any fresh salad stuff.... it%26#39;s the worry that it may have been washed is unclean water....

Guess places like Egypt, Mexico or India are more likely to be of concern than Thailand.... Just find that when I follow these simple guidelines I don%26#39;t get sick...

It%26#39;s ok to buy food from street stalls .. if and only if.. you see it being cooked then and there....

NEVER be tempted to eat stuff that has been sitting in a bain-marie... like smorgasbord lunch... no matter how many stars the resort has....

Cocktails - Is it okay to have ice in Mixed drinks, cocktail

From experience, it has never been a problem for me. Only ones to look out for are the iced water they serve at roadside stores. Do not touch...

I always have ice in my drinks, the crushed or chipped ice is not safe, (so if you buy fresh oysters, say NO ice on them as it will be the crushed ice and we know of people who have been very sick from this).)

The ice in your hotel or in your drinks at bars (big cylinder cubes with a hole through it) are fine.

    Cathy

If you have ever had a dicky stomach on holiday then NEVER have any ice, in a hitel or not, a good holiday and what it costs is too much of an investment to risk.

I%26#39;d consider not having fruit either.

    Worked for me.

fruit is ok... if it%26#39;s fresh and you can peel it yourself.....

but fruit drinks/shakes may hve to be contemplated carefully.... I%26#39;ve often seen what a small welcome drink, even at 5* resorts, can achieve..... as a rule of thumb... the more stars.. the sicker you get... perhaps because one lets down the guard if it%26#39;s a hotel chain of repute...

BUT, what works for some may not work for others...

I agree with the statement that a vacation is a big investment.... spending even a day or two moaning and groaning half the time in bed and the other in the bathroom is not good planning!

    Drink water from sealed bottles.

Never take ice in your drinks from street vendors.

As for ice in bars, restaurants in any hotel ........its a big question mark. You do not know if the ice is made from clean, germs free water or that the hotel gets the ice from an ice supplier elsewhere.

If you have previous health problems with ice consumption, then, do not take ice in whatever circumstances and from anywhere, even in 5 stars hotels.

Almost all bars / restaurants / hotels are using 2 different kind of ice, both delivered from ice factories.

One kind is the crushed ice wich is to cool drinks etc (bot) the other is a ice cube with normally a hole in the middle which is produced for consumption (unic)

To state not to use ice in drinks, not to eat fresh salads, fruits etc will limit your enjoyment of your holidays. There is no reason to avoid the items described as long as minimal safeguards are being followed. As no crushed ice in drinks but only the consumption ice etc.

My best guess is that only a few are following the %26#39;touch nothing%26#39; rule. All others have more likely a better holiday with ice.

So the question is: yes, it is OK to have ice in your drink.

    Enjoy that margarita!!

I concur with the ice with a hole in it is the safe bet ..... but then again I think the days of bad ice are over when eating at reputable hotels and restaurants. if drinking at some out of the way place I would certainly say ';no ice';. to go without ice in the steamy tropics is a hard chore

I have spent six months over the last six years in Thailand, and I have gotten sick from the water. Of course it was well water in Si Sa Ket province, and I had a gut feeling, so to speak, not to drink it but did anyway. That was a mistake. Having said that, I seriously doubt you will drink well water in Si Sa Ket, or anywhere else. In Bangkok or other tourist areas, I would still suggest bottled water, but the tap water will probably not make you sick. Ice in drinks is fine. I have never gotten sick from fresh fruit or salads.

I think a little common sense is a good thing. But I also think it is important to remember that food safety is an issue anywhere, including the USA, Australia, and Europe. I have also gotten sick eating at restaurants in my home town.

Relax, enjoy your vacation, and have a cold cocktail if you want one.

Agree with the poster who said its o.k. to have ice as its mostly delivered from ice companies (as our ';pool bar'; does.) I%26#39;ve never had a problem with ice from anywhere in 9 years, but as mosegrisen quite rightly says what works for one may not for another. (nor a ';dodgy%26#39; stomach from a meal, very lucky!) Enjoy your cocktails!

    bangkok airways

has anyone been through the new bangkok airport on route to samui ,is it any easyier then before ? last year when we flew to samui we had to leave the international terminal (with luggage !!) and take a short bus ride to the bangkok air terminal how does it work in the new airport ? and do bangkok airways still have thier own lounge with newspapers internet, drinks etc. thanks

    bangkok airways

just come back from trip to bangkok and koh samui - i tell you what i was terrified about the new airport from everything i read on the internet but in actual fact it was a breeze! You check in at the main departure building, Bangkok airways will point you in the direction you have to go to get to you departure gate. (There are boards to let you know which gate to go to) On the way there are those moving floor things to make your transit time quicker to the gate - i would say it took us about 5 mins to get to our departure gate - piece of cake! hope this has reassured you.

    bangkok airways

    Hi

Just arrived from BK-Ko Samui and we were more than impressed with the new airport, even very positively surprised by the service received by Bangkok Airways, would recomend them.

Tks for the info. Can you tell us, do BKK Airways still have their own lounge with internet, newspapers etc., We dont want to go through if there is nothing there, if you get what I mean. Tks. again.

  • Snorkeling - please recommend good agency!

In Ko Chang, can you please recommend a good tour company for snorkeling for half a day? What is the name? And where in Ko Chang can I book?

I prefer going with a company that takes 10 people or less, but do not have the $$ to pay for a private one. Any recommendations would be great.

Also, do some tour companies do fishing plus snorkeling?

    Thanks.

Snorkeling - please recommend good agency!

!0 people or less, you%26#39;ll have to go on a tour by speedboat. Should have 10-15, not more on the boat, These will probably leave at around 9.30am and get abck to KC around 3-4pm. The boats go to the same places and lunch is included, so there isnt anything to choose between them. Try Kai Bae Hut SPeedboat, ChaiChet Bungalow speedboat, Magic Resort Speedboat or Chang View Speedboats - all run this type of trip, speak to any tour agent and they%26#39;ll fix you up with a ticket

If you only want to go for half a day then you%26#39;ll have to contact one of the dive schools and go snorkelling when they take people out diving.

Expect to pay 700 - 900 baht for either of the above trips.

On the big snorkelling boats they usually have a couple of fishing rods, but these are more for fun than for serious fishing. Or you can hire a good rod for the day for 150-200baht

    Paradise resort

    Thanks Ian for Your answer.

I think that we are going for Paradise resort.

Do you think we should stay in a superior beach front or dlx beach front?

Do You know where to find any good pics of the resort?

    Paradise resort

It%26#39;s only worth paying the premium for the beachfriont room if you%26#39;re the type of people who spend a lot of time sitting on the verandah outside the room and want a nice view.

Some of the hotel booking sites or the hotel%26#39;s website might have some good photos ( www.kohchangparadise.com )

Bagkok - Cha am By Taxi

    Hi everyone

Will be in bangkok late november and getting taxi to Cha Am. Can anyone advise me how much i should be looking at paying for a taxi ?

    Many Thanks

Bagkok - Cha am By Taxi

I checked with my usual taxi near home (BKK). 2000 Baht. nego.

Bagkok - Cha am By Taxi

We travelled from Bangkok (Holiday Inn) to Cha am in October and then from Cha am back to the airport. We were charged 3000baht each wasy, but we were happy with that as the driver was good and his taxi was clean. The taxi was arranged by the hotel and we liked him so much that we asked him to return to pick us up when we needed to go back to the airport to return home.

  • Sea Canoe's - not too keen

Heading over to Phuket Dec 27th, and the majority of our group would like to experience the John Grey Starlight tour. Myself and a friend and not too keen on the ocean, so was wondering whether it is possible to stay onboard the boat whilst the rest of our party heads out on the canoes ? If so, are there facilities on the boat so we can entertain ourselves with a good book and a cocktail ? Also, will the life jackets accomodate small children, 5 yr old, or should we take our own ? Thanks in advance.

Sea Canoe's - not too keen

    Hello Nelson11

The boat is 24 meters long with 2 decks and you will have lots of room to loung about but coctails are out of the question as thankfully this is a dry boat.

Lifejackets for kids are no problem and I,m sure once you cruise out to the Hongs you will want to join the main tour when you realize how hastle free it is. Hope this info helps with your planning the day out and regards from Phuket.

    Phuket advice

I am planning our first trip to Thailand for april 08. Myself and hubby are staying at the Marriott in Bangkok for 4 nights. For the 10 next days is where I am undecided. We are nature lovers, mad about exotic beautiful beaches and keen snorkellers. We also like to explore inland. I have been torn between Phuket,Krabi, Koh Phangan and Koh Samet. We do not want touristy/built-up and want a true Thai experience. I discounted Phuket on the basis that I wanted somewhere less developed but having just read fantastic recent reviews on the hotel I was originally keen on,Cape Panwa, I am even more confused again. Anyones experiences much appreciated as it is a bit of a minefield with so many different places to choose from. Thanks!

    Phuket advice

Hi Glampuss, Have a look around the Rawai area. CJ

    Phuket advice

Krabi is the least built up right now but growing fast

you can take long tail boat to island%26#39;s or go to railey for rock climbing

to get a true Thai experience you would have to go north and inland away from ocean. don%26#39;t get me wrong I love the beaches and all of thailand and I always have a great time but it is now so built up for tourist%26#39;s you never get to see the thai people only other tourist and the thai%26#39;s catering to them.

Sawadeeka have you ever been to Koh Lanta? This looks a more traditional island(saw a programme on it the other day). I am interested in the Layana resort.

Chuckyjellie where is the Rawai area?

never been to Koh lanta but have heard they have some of the best snorkling.

Really? Thats fired me up, great snorkelling is a huge plus for us

Now I am fired up about going back and snorkling

I should have went there last week while I was in Krabi..

    check out this site www.lantainfo.com

they had some great pics of snorkling.

    Hi glampuss

You may want to make a post to the attention of ';SanClemente'; on this forum. Duncan %26amp; Kate stayed at the Evason Resort in the Rawai area just down the road from my home last year. This year they wanted a bit more culture, a nice beach with snorkeling and a more laid back away from the touristy atmoushere. They stayed for 2 weeks at the Sabana Resort on Nai Harn Beach. The Le Meridian Royal Yacht Club is next door and a lot more upmarket but these are the only places on a beach the same size as Kata.

Megumi and I have lived just up the road for 11 years and compared to Patong you will feel like you are on a different planet. I hope this will help with your travel planning and regards from Phuket.
