Airline from Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai possible

My wife and I are staying with a friend in Khon Kaen and wish to fly on to Chiang Mai for a short stay there as well, can we take a flight or do we need to bus to Udon Thani and then fly?

There is an airport at Khon Kaen. I do not think you will get a nonstop flight to Chiang Mai, but it is probably quicker to fly via Bangkok than take a bus to Udon Thani and then fly.

I just looked it up on Thai Air website, and the day I checked for it was actually cheaper to fly from Khon Kaen via Bangkok to Chiang Mai than Udon Thani direct to Chiang Mai.

I haven%26#39;t looked up the flight connections for either of these, but assuming;

1 hour check in

1 hour flight to BKK

2 hour connection

1 and half hour flight

1 hour collect bags and transfer to town

These are minimum assumptions, may be much more, particularly if you go via Udon.

Why not get the bus directly - takes about 10 hours.

Interesting scenery along the way, and the roads are pretty good.

Cheaper too.
