car/jeep rental advice?

Hi, we rented a Suzuki jeep (2 seater) for 800baht a day from a shop off Chaweng beach, near Poppies resort. Insurance included. There were shops in Lamai which rent the same jeep for 700baht a day. All we had to do was leave some form of ID with them. At first we were wary of small car rental shops as well but thankfully everything went smoothly. Our personal travel insurance covers motor accidents too. If you%26#39;re don%26#39;t have a tight budget, you can rent from the big names like Hertz, etc. for a stress-free experience.

Was in Samui this week and rented a Jeep from Fisherman%26#39;s village, Bophut. It cost 800 baht including insurance and had only done 500 km on the clock. We made sure we saw the Jeep before we handed over the cash.

Jeep went well and its a great way to see the island especially as taxi%26#39;s aren%26#39;t that cheap.

Many of the people renting at 800 Bht a day will tell you it includes insurance and show you an A4 printed sheet with the details. They will then request that you leave your passport or something else of value with them.That%26#39;s when you should start asking yourself questions as to why? The only trouble comes when you have an accident and suddenly you find out that you are not really covered and you will not get your passport back until you pay for the damage whether the fault was yours or not. I would not personally rent from anyone unless going through a reputable resort or car hire company but hey if you like the idea of car rental roulette then go for it!

Whenever did you hear of Hertz or Budget asking you to leave your passport with them? These people know full well that without saying that you have insurance cover they would never rent out their cars.

Besides all of this I personally do not feel the need to rent with these people since I can collect a lovely aircon 5 seater pickup at the airport ,with full insurance and the full backup and services that an internationaly reputable car hire company provides....and oh yes..I almost forgot...it works out at less than 800 Bht per day if hired for 7 + days.

Hi,

We are stopping at Ko Samui for a day on a cruise next year and would like suggestions on the best way to get around.

I%26#39;ve been told that a drive around the island might be a good option. We have about 8-9 hours. Do you know if it is possible to hire a taxi for the day to take us around the island, stopping at the places we want??

If we hired a car or jeep, is an international driver%26#39;s licence required?

Thanks,

Tracey.

many thanks for all the speedy replies, much appreciated
