Has anyone been through Customs in Bangkok very recently? We have read horror stories of people having their bags closely scrutinized by Customs officials in the new airport and then asked to pay exorbitant fines for bringing in items disallowed or over the limit (usually booze/ cigarettes). Does this happen often? We are a family of 4 and will not be carrying any alcohol or tobacco but will have tons of souvenir items from other countries. Will this be a potential problem?
Getting through Customs at the new airport
I just went through the new airport and breezed through customs---no questions asked--just like in the old airport.

Same here. Took us no time to get through immigration, get our bags and walked straight through. If you are not breaking the law with anything you won%26#39;t have a problem. Bring in more than you are allowed with booze and cigarettes then your are just asking for trouble. You wouldn%26#39;t dare break the law coming through your own customs so why would you break Thailand%26#39;s laws. Can%26#39;t understand why people do it.
Your souvenirs will be fine also.
Thanks very much for your prompt feedback. We are somewhat relieved. Happy trails!
On our recent trip through South Asia we went through immigration and customs with no problems. Compared to Kathmandu, Lhasa and Saigon it was a breeze.
Two weeks ago on my way to a 4-day business trip, with little luggage, I was asked to put my bags on the x-ray machine. After having been flying into Bangkok regularly for 15 years, this was the first time. They did not pay close scrutiny and did not open my bags, but it was the first time for me. It is possible that there has been an effort made to improve customs efforts at the airport. They stopped the family behind me as wll.

For me arriving at the new airport I went through immigration in a snap..took about three to five minutes total from a short line to the end of the transaction. Customs involved a guy at a lecturn waving everyone by...lol. Just walked right by him and straight down to arrivals level for a cab. This was on a 10/20/06 arrival around 1730 in the afternoon.
